Clairol is one of the largest hair-care companies in the world. They are owned by personal and home care corporate giant Procter & Gamble, the same company that also owns globally distributed hair-care lines Pantene, physique, Head & Shoulders, Infusium 23, Pert Plus, and Vidal Sassoon. Where Clairol really excels is with their at-home permanent and semi-permanent color products. Brands include Ultress, Nice 'N Easy and Natural Instincts, and the technology that goes into creating these dyes is impressive. Sadly, the same cannot be said for their hair-care products, which now include to main lines Daily Renewal 5x and Herbal Essences - and the dwindling Daily Defense line.

Daily Renewal and Herbal Essences offer an enormous assortment of products, but the redundancy between them is staggering. A major problem is that the Herbal Essences shampoos were the top-selling shampoos of 2003, despite the fact that every one of them contains the drying detergent cleansing agent sodium lauryl sulfate. That is not good news, and it means that millions of consumers are causing their hair and scalp to be needlessly dry by turning to these heavily advertised shampoos. Presumably, many of you like the smell of the Herbal Essences products, and this is an area where we'll have to agree to disagree, because the entire Herbal Essences line is one of the most perfumed hair-care collections around. The olfactory experience may please you, but you're not doing your scalp any favors by cleansing, conditioning, and styling with such strongly scented products.
