SALON VS HOME PRODUCTS

If you decide to try a permanent wave or relaxer, then my heartfelt suggestion is to get it done at the hair salon and not do it at home. It's not that permanent wave or hair products from salon are any better than the ones you buy at the drugstore - these products are all the same whether they are purchased at a drugstore or performed at a hair salon. The issue is one of risk during the processing procedure, and how the hair is manipulated. If you wind the hair too tightly around the rod for the curly perms you can lose chunks of hair; if you comb hair in the wrong direction for a relaxer you can also destroy hair; or if you leave the chemicals on too long, you can end up with scalp burns and hair loss. Seeing an experienced professional reduces your risk immeasurably over doing this yourself.

I know many of you would like for me to recommend the perfect at-home permanent wave or hair-relaxer kit or the exact method for getting foolproof results, but the truth is, there aren't any. Again, it's not that the product formulations are different, because they aren't. The basic principle is that permanent waving is simply hard on the hair, whether it's done at the salon or at home. Doing it yourself is riskier because so many details go into creating an attractive perm that it is hard for even the most experienced technician get all the elements right.
