PAUL MITCHELL

This extensive product line has been a mainstay in salons for so long that it feels like an old, comfortable sweater that lasts season after season. Paul Mitchell was a hairstylist, and one of the first to launch his own line of products. The story of how this line came to be and how it grew into a company with sales over $800 million per year is filled with classic American can-do attitude and more than a bit of risk-taking.

Paul Mitchell and his business partner, John Paul DeJoria, devised the line in 1979, and spent all their savings to travel and promote the (then small) selection of products to salons across the country. Skeptical salon owners were offered a deal that was unheard of at the time: Buy Paul Mitchell products to use on your clients and if they (and the salon staff) were not happy with them, they could send them back for a full refund. The idea worked, and the seeds for what became one of the most distributed salon lines in the world were planted. If you are not familiar with this line, then you must be frequenting one of the 90,000 U.S. salons where it is sold. There are many well-formulated products available from Paul Mitchell, but there are also enough missteps along the way that it's not a hair-care line to shop blindly.
